Marcellus Summers

Director of Veterans Advocacy

Marcellus Summers brings more than sixteen years of leadership in program management, organizational development, and community building to the Open Door Pathway Foundation board. His career has been defined by one consistent thread: creating meaningful, measurable impact for underserved individuals, families, and communities.

Marcellus began his career as a youth advocate, supporting students experiencing homelessness and school disengagement, and later managed tutoring programs in partnership with Chicago HOPES, LLC for youth residing in shelters. Over the years, he has developed deep expertise in grant management, policy development, dispute resolution, staff training, and program implementation, with a particular focus on educational access and housing stability for vulnerable populations.

During his tenure supporting homeless education initiatives, Marcellus successfully secured and managed federal and state grants, developed policies and procedures, and trained school administrators on McKinney Vento and homeless education requirements. His leadership was recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for exceptional organization and leadership during the 2017 National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) Conference. He also helped spearhead the Chicago Public Schools homeless education program featured in the Emmy Award winning PBS documentary The Homestretch.

In 2022, Marcellus led the implementation of the CPR3 Smartphone Program, a partnership with T Mobile and Premier Wireless that provided free cell phones to unaccompanied homeless youth, helping bridge critical communication and resource access gaps. More recently, he has developed policies and guidelines for comprehensive case management, permanent housing assistance, homeless diversion, short term homelessness prevention, and veteran assistance programs with nonprofit agencies in the Houston, Texas area.

Today, Marcellus provides strategic leadership, manager development, and oversight of programs serving veterans and their families throughout the Houston region. He leads multidisciplinary teams, manages city and federal grant funding, cultivates community partnerships, and designs initiatives that address housing, economic stability, and supportive services.

Marcellus holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Benedictine University and a Master of Arts in Executive Leadership Coaching from Lewis University.

He serves on the Open Door Pathway Foundation board because the mission to provide stable, dignified housing for veterans and adults experiencing homelessness reflects the work that has guided his career for nearly two decades.
